Description: This beautiful book is a "carefully revised" edition of a previous work by the same name. It is split into eight chapters covering all aspects of ancient Jewish culture in meticulous detail:
Exquisitely illustrated throughout with mesmerising woodcuts, engravings, and line drawings – the vast majority of which are full-page. Also includes a b&w frontispiece. Pastedowns and endpapers list a range of illustrated titles by the publisher.
Chocolate cloth boards with embossed pattern, text, and motif (pattern is blind-stamped on rear cover). Gilded title on spine. Corners are bumped – lower ones slightly worn. Small dent on right edge of front cover (refer to image). Spine bumped; slightly split at head, but nothing major. Endpapers discoloured from where they made contact with the pastedowns. Otherwise all pages are in superb condition for their age: crisp, unmarked, completely free from foxing, and only lightly tanned. One Frederick E. Stephens has rubber-stamped his name in purple ink on flyleaf.
No year of publication given, but believed to date from c.1880
A lovely copy of a scarce and fascinating book which no enthusiast of ancient civilisations should be without!
Measures 18.5 cm × 12.5 cm (7.4″ × 5″). 12mo. 176 pp. + 4 pp. catalogue listing other titles by the publisher.
