Description: Superbly written, with wit and a wealth of psychological observation, this is the keenly human and deeply moving story of Louis XIV – Le Roi Soleil, the very embodiment of magnificence and luxury – and his tragic love affair with the innocent and modestly raised Louise de la Vallière.
Turquoise cloth boards with black embossed text on spine. Upper corners and spine lightly bumped; negligible stain on tail of latter. Dust jacket has some minor scuffing and closed tears at spine ends (negligible loss at tail), but is otherwise complete. Light soiling on rear. Original price of 9/6 net printed on spine. Of particular interest is the post-war Voice of Britain propaganda statement (complete with b&w illustration) on the rear flap: Throughout the years of war, British broadcasts have been proved to respect the truth[…]you can rely on these broadcasts to express the ideals for which Britain has fought, to give accurate news and just comment. Pages are lightly tanned, but remain clean and completely free from foxing. Binding is sound.
