Description: Scent, or perfume as Shakespeare preferred to call it, has from the beginning of history been a symbol of luxury and wealth. It was the most highly prized of all possessions in the ancient world – Tutankhamun was buried with 400 litres of fragrant oils. Cleopatra's scent, kyphi is now on the market after having disappeared for 2,000 years.
This book is more than just a fascinating history of the fashions, romances and cultures of the past. It is a whole new sensory experience. After many years of research, 18 of the world's most famous fragrances have been captured using scratch and sniff labels.
Profusely illustrated with full-colour and b&w reproductions, woodcuts, engravings, and photographs – many of which are full-page or double-spread. Signed by the author on title page: "Dec 1st 1975, John Trueman".
Maroon cloth boards. Jacket lightly scuffed along top edges, otherwise excellent. Stiff brown card is holding the jacket in place. It is unclear whether this was intentional or the work of the previous owner. The book itself is as new.
