Description: The first in a series of two books aimed for secondary school children features two stories: that in the title plus House to Let. The first concerns the bitter rivalry betwixt red and grey squirrels, whilst the second portrays a tree in a copse as a sort of woodland 'des res'. Various tenants – woodpeckers, hedgehogs, rabbits, owls, even a wasp! – move in to the 'house' where they find, or create their own, snug little apartments. Each story ends with a glossary of technical, advanced and awkward words that were used.
Illustrated throughout with Cuthill's beautiful b&w woodcuts – many of which are full-page.
Pictorial cloth covers slightly creased along spine and rear. Discreet gift inscription on inside cover in blue ballpoint. Inside covers foxed. Pages have generally resisted foxing and a sporadic few have only a jot or two. Remarkably for a paperback of this vintage, the pages aren't tanned and are in very good condition: unmarked and very tightly bound.
A very rare survivor.
Measures 18.5 cm × 12.5 cm (7.4″ × 5″). 12mo. 62 pp.
