Description: "The 18 stories told here are based on legends from all over the world. None are meant to be read as correct folklore versions; they are fresh interpretations of old tales in which the author has invented characters, names, situations and backgrounds as she needed them to fill out the original story-line. An immense amount of research has gone into the book, but what strikes the reader is the brilliance and originality of these stories, recreated by a highly individual imagination. They are as varied as the countries they come from, ranging from the delicate serenity of the Buddhist 'Irani and the Cuckoos' to the weirdly humorous drama of the African 'The Ten Years' Child'…from the lyrical and tragic Romanian legend of 'Trandafir' to the ironic Egyptian tale of 'Bata'."
Features 18 stunning colour plates (one for each legend) by Errol Le Cain.
