Description:
First edition of the story about a group of schoolmates in Victorian era America.
No illustrations as such, though the book does have many b&w ornamental designs, and each chapter begins with a b&w illuminated initial. Floral patterned pastedowns and endpapers. Pictorial cloth boards with partially gilded illustration. Partially gilded spine. Gilded page edges. The boards have become slightly skewed, resulting in the front board having weakened somewhat. The spine is bumped and lightly frayed along the head and tail. Rear board slightly warped from damp. Internally, the book is in excellent condition for its age. The pages are tightly bound (although the binding has become partially exposed at the centre), and the pages are crisp and unmarked – except for some sporadic foxing. Black ink inscription dated 1887 states the book was awarded as an examination prize. Measures 19 cm × 12.5 cm (7.6″ × 5″). Large 12mo. 408 pp. + 8 pp. detailing other books by the publisher.
