Description: This surprisingly rare volume is an indispensable guide for the amateur cook or, as stated by its author, the "intelligent housewife". Split into 30 chapters, the book covers all aspects of cookery – from the choice and care of cooking utensils through to baking and the preparation of meat, vegetables, and dairy products. There is even a chapter named Invalid Cookery which features several recipes suitable for consumption by those suffering from stomach complaints or fevers. A useful glossary of cooking terms is provided, alongside conversions for weights, measures, and temperature. Also includes a unique What Went Wrong—And Why section, explaining in detail the solutions to common problems encountered in bread, pastry, and saucemaking.
Illustrated with 4 b&w drawings, and numerous colour photographs on glossy plates.
Pictorial cloth boards. Spine ends bumped; upper corners lightly so. Front and rear endpapers have a few specks of foxing – also some negligible soiling to front pastedown. Otherwise all pages are in excellent, unmarked condition, with not a jot of foxing or even so much as a hint of tanning or other discolouration. Having said that, several pages towards the end are dog-eared in their lower corners, whilst pp. 486-490 have some negligible foxing at the foot.
Measures 22 cm × 13.5 cm (8.8″ × 5.4″). Large 8vo. 502 pp.
